5 Tips to Give Your Attitude a Boost

February 24, 2010

Your attitude about life is one of the most important factors for success.  A bad attitude gets you nowhere, while a good one can provide you with enough motivation to succeed beyond your dreams.

You may think that you already have a success-mindset, and perhaps you do.  However, you can always benefit from strengthening that attitude and therefore increasing your chances for the success you deserve.

Follow these strategies for improving your attitude for success:

1. Find your inspiration.  Discover what inspires you the most and use it to jumpstart your motivation whenever you go.  Feeling inspired enables you to maintain the drive necessary to find success.  Do anything you can within your power to find inspiration.

* Make a list of your ultimate dreams, and then ask yourself if you’re on the right path.  If you are, you’ll know that everything you’re doing will be rewarded.

* If you don’t feel like you’re on the right path, perhaps it’s time for a change.  Maybe there’s a deeper reason why you’ve felt a lack of motivation. Reflect on what this reason might be, and then decide on how you can renew your drive.  When you’re on the right journey, you’ll feel inspired!

2. Surround yourself with positive people.  (One of my favorites!)  When you’re around positive and inspiring people, you’re more likely to adopt those traits into your own personality and go for your goals with enthusiasm.  Negative people, on the other hand, tend to make you negative also.  Energy is contagious whether it’s positive or negative.

* If you must be around people that continually bring you down, do your best to avoid absorbing their negative energy by listening, but not taking the negativity to heart.

3. Jump right in.  The best way to improve your attitude might be to just jump right into life. Don’t be afraid to take initiative and plunge forward towards your goals.  People who take action find success.  If you take action and start to see the results of your efforts, your attitude will only improve. The action doesn’t have to be big – it just has to be something!  Remember, small steps are great ways to get moving.

* The increased drive and motivation you get from your actions can be the difference between success and failure.

4. Strengthen your focus.  Your focus can also play a role in your attitude.  When you are driven toward success, it’s easier to have an optimistic attitude. If you have a lack of focus and don’t know where you’re going, it leads to being unmotivated and uncaring.  You just seem to go in circles.

5. Allow for mistakes.  You’re only human and you will make mistakes from time to time.  Be careful to avoid judging yourself harshly when this happens, as it negatively affects your self-confidence.  If you work on more of a “go with the flow” attitude, you’ll find that you’re able to pick yourself back up and continue moving forward when you do make a mistake.

The main things to keep in mind are that the combination of inspiration, positive thoughts, and proper motivation can lead you to a healthy and positive attitude.  Follow these strategies daily and you’ll boost your attitude for success.

It’s All About The Climb

April 6, 2009

***************************************************

Lyrics from The Climb by Miley Cyrus

I can almost see it
That dream I’m dreamin, but
There’s a voice inside my head sayin
You’ll never reach it
Every step I’m taking
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking

But I, I gotta keep tryin
Gotta keep my head held high

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
That sometimes I’m gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about whats waitin on the other side
Its the climb

The struggles I’m facin
The chances I’m takin
Sometimes might knock me down, but
No, I’m not breaking
I may not know it
But these are the moments that
I’m gonna remember most yeah
Just gotta keep going

And I, I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on, cause

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
That sometimes I’m gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waitin on the other side
Its the climb
Yeah

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
That sometimes I’m gonna have to lose
Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waitin on the other side
Its the climb
Yeah yeah

Keep on movin
Keep climbin
Keep the faith, baby
Its all about, its all about the climb
Keep the faith
Keep your faith
Whoa, whoa

A friend of mine, who is battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, posted this video and the lyrics in early March.  I had heard of the song at that time, but really hadn’t paid much attention to it.  As I listened to the song and applied it to my life, it’s like a light bulb went off.

It’s now become my anthem.

We all try to get to the other side in life, right?  We always think if we can just get to the weekend, if we can just meet that deadline, if we can just get through the work to the end of the day, if we can just achieve that goal, if we just had enough money and on and on.  Can you relate?

It’s really not so much about physically achieving things – I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s great to achieve our goals and important to do so, but so much of the learning is about “The Climb” and what we learn along the way.

If we can actually relish in the journey as opposed to wishing away the day or week or seeing that we haven’t yet achieved that goal – think about how much richer your experience will be!

So many people have heard me say that I’ve done so much growing personally and professionally in the past five years that it almost hurts.  I often feel like the incredible hulk just exploding.  Sometimes good and sometimes bad, but when I now look back on it, I realize that I had to go though the struggles and the achievements to get where I’m at.  It’s really all about what I’m learning and doing along the way.

Life will never be perfect, there will always be another mountain to climb – that’s the beauty of life. We never stop growing.  We never stop changing.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but it’s a matter of keeping faith – whatever that means to you – to keep moving forward and look at every experience as a blessing - no matter how hard.

I’m not where I need to be yet, but I am going to keep on climbing and enjoying all the beauty along the way.  How about you?

In gratitude,

P.S.  My bff and her family popped over last night to join in the celebration of my sister’s birthday.  It was a wonderful evening of friends and family sharing conversation, love, and oh yeah – yummy cake around the dinner table.  We got talking about our phones for some reason and my bff told me that I needed to call her phone so that everyone could hear the special ring tone she had for me.  I dialed the number and what did she have for me?  You guessed it, The Climb. It’s funny because we’ve never really talked about the song aside from me maybe mentioning once or twice that I liked it.  I know it’s only a ring tone, but it really meant a lot to me that she chose that for me.  It’s definitely my anthem.  What’s yours?

Things Don’t Change, We Do!

February 16, 2009

by Janie Behr

I have been going to the same bank for 25 years and have become known by many of the long time employees there as a good listener. Recently I had an interesting conversation with one of the tellers, which I would like to share with you.

I had no sooner extended my normal, “How’s it going?”, then she began an instant download about her thirty two year old son whom she can’t get to leave home. She went on about how he does not work, help with living expenses or even clean up his room. I just smiled and listened intently to her story until she said something so juicy so ripe for a reply. I could not let it pass.

She said, “I can’t wait for next year to get here.” I asked why, she replied, “Because it has to better than this year.”

“Why is that?” I asked,

“Just because it is a new year, I guess; maybe things will change.” She responded.

I told her that the only problem with her theory is that life is much like watching a poorly written and produced play: The next act will be no better than the last one. Likewise, she will have the same son living in the same home in two weeks as she does now- nothing will change but the dates.

If thirty years hasn’t done it, a week, a month, another year doesn’t stand a chance. At that point, I was moved to share one of my favorite sayings with her, “things don’t change, we do.”

She laughed and said, “Exactly right…. now, tell me what that means.”

I told her that it meant that if she did not address the problem now, next year would be a repeat of this one. Beyond that, perhaps the real problem isn’t her son, but rather how she feels about herself regarding her son. I suggested that she had two choices. Either one of them would work if she could make peace with them.

1. She could change her mind about her willingness to tolerate the situation even a day longer and muster up the courage and self acceptance to request that he leave and mean it.

2. Or, she could choose to change her perception and accept him and the circumstances just as they are and turn it into a non-problem.

Either choice would require a certain degree of acceptance and change on her part, but the result would be some sense of inner peace.

How about you?

Is there an issue going on in your life today that you are hoping will just sort of magically change by itself next year? Generally, that is not how to rid yourself of your problems, is it? As Mark Twain said, “Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.”

Perhaps, like my teller friend you need to look clearly at your issue, thus bringing you the most authentic experience of inner peace possible. What can you do today to begin to deal with your problem in a proactive manner? What action can you take? It might include, asking a trusted friend, mentor or counselor for some support, and honest feedback. It could also include making space available in your mind and heart for God’s presence to be more fully revealed. With your willingness, that presence becomes an incredible guidance system. Isn’t it great to know you always have a choice?

Make a decision today to either accept what is or do something about it. Stop swimming in the river of denial because it is polluted with hidden resentment (toward yourself as well as others) and fear and because it gets you nowhere fast.

It is time to Experience the Power of Positive Change…and the decisions are yours. Finally, you are the captain of your own ship; you are in control. It is time to get started on this new voyage…

We all have those moments when we need inspiration to gain confidence and build momentum.  That’s why inspirational sayings are so popular!

When you live a life without inspiration, it can be a life without any real joy or passion.  In those moments where you need a little pick me up or a reminder of the many great things you have in your life, you can turn to the power of inspirational words. You need to have a collection of inspirational sayings in your toolkit that resonate with you so you can get more done and still feel great!

There are a lot of great motivational sayings out there that we can turn to when we are feeling down, but we should be using them all the time, rain or shine!  Strive to incorporate inspirational sayings into your every day life, using them to inspire you to reach higher and push harder so you can achieve all of the things you have set out to do and more.

Some wonderful inspirational sayings include:

Accomplish More with the Power of Inspirational Thinking

Inspirational sayings and affirmations can help us move forward in life and accomplish greater things than we could have ever imagined.  After all, we can’t deny the power of a can-do attitude. If more of us incorporate inspiration into our lives, we would all be happier and more successful people.  When you incorporate positive sayings into your life, you’ll find that you’ll respond on a subconscious level and you’ll no longer need to look very far for inspiration!

If you’re down or lacking confidence, you can use inspirational sayings to find the courage to move forward and force out any negative thoughts that may be cycling through your mind.  When you say these statements with gusto, you are re-affirming positive thoughts in your mind, making them a part of who you are.  Remember to use these sayings at any and every occasion to give you the inspiration you need to get through any challenge, both big and small.

Gratitude and Conscious Appreciation

October 16, 2008

Sitting at my desk, I pulled out one of my Wayne Dyer Inner Peace Cards and here’s what it said:

“I appreciate all that I am and all that I have.  Stop focusing on what you do not have, and shift your consciousness to an appreciation for all that you are and all that you do have.”

I think this can be tough for a lot of people, especially in today’s tough economic times…however when you can make the shift that Wayne speaks of it can create a world of difference.  It takes the power away from what you don’t have and makes what you do have that much more special.

I have heard so many people say that they love their Gratitude Bracelet for this reason.  It’s a visual reminder for them to be grateful and thankful for all that they have no matter what the circumstances are.  You may have something special that symbolizes this for you–it’s a great way to have a tangible reminder when some days can be tough.
